As I bought my 2nd-hand trike with a set of 3 spike (studded) tires for winter (Marathon Winter, from Schwalbe – here is a recent review), I decided the other day to mount them, as the temperatures went below 0°C, with some icy roads.
First impressions : incredible the effect they produce – even on a completely icy parking area, the grip is just fantastic. But after some days, when the temperatures go above 0°C again, well… you wonder how long you will keep them, as you “waste” quite some energy with them. I will later check the extra energy they take to ride, but for sure, you are slower. As my bike commuting is also a way to exercice, well, for now, I keep them still some days. And I guess when I will know how much it costs to replace the 3, I will be more cautious in using them !
With spike tires, on a trike where you have the best stability, commuting by bike in the winter time is (also, or still) fun. For sure, with a regular bike, I would not have used it on some days in the last weeks…
